The Central/Clayton Ridge girls wrestling team concluded its season Jan. 30 at the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Class 1A regional at Denver.
Senior and previous state qualifier Mayleigh Medberry placed third at 125 pounds, just missing out on a return trip to Coralville. After winning her quarterfinal match, Medberry was pinned by Kaydnce Cowell of Sumner-Frederickburg in the semifinals. Although Medberry won her consolation semifinal and third place matches by technical fall and fall, respectively, Cowell’s loss in the championship bout did not give her a chance at a wrestleback for second place. Only the top two wrestlers qualified for state.
Maci Keppler also placed for the Warriors, claiming fourth at 135 pounds. Like Medberry, Keppler won her quarterfinal match, but was upended in the semifinals by a Sumner-Fredericksburg wrestler. She bounced back with an 11-8 decision over Gracie Kuhn of North Fayette Valley in the consolation semis, but couldn’t get past Kate Knutson of Denver in the third place match.
Wrestling at 115 pounds, Kendall Wagner picked up three wins at the tournament, but did not place. Luz Hernandez (130) was 1-2 and Mylee Mueller (170) 0-2 and also did not place in their respective brackets.
