A new senior meal site will open in Marquette on Friday, Feb. 20.

Community members are welcome to enjoy nutritious meals and socialize at the Marquette Community Center at 102 North St. every third Friday beginning that day. Meals will be served at noon, but the site will open at 11 a.m.

Resident Cindy Halvorson spearheaded the idea following the closure, in November, of the Marquette Bar and Cafe. The business was Marquette’s only regular daytime sit-down dining option and a social hub for the community.

“A lot of older people went there and now they have no place to go and just socialize, especially earlier in the day. That’s a huge thing. I felt we needed to do something,” Halvorson shared.

She reached out to a contact in Prairie du Chien, Wis., to learn how their meal site operated, and was eventually connected with the Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging. With its space, handicap accessibility and restrooms, the community center seemed like a perfect fit to host. Marquette city staff and the council approved it, and Halvorson said volunteers were on board in no time.

The meals, which must meet specific nutritional standards, will be cold meals initially. The first will consist of a sandwich, potato salad and fruit cup, courtesy of an approved vendor from Decorah.

“The city of Marquette will supply coffee and cups,” Halvorson said. Since the meal site will open at 11 a.m., “people can come and have coffee prior. The meal will be served at noon.”

Meals are available for free will donation for those aged 60 and over. For those under 60, the meal cost is $10. All meals must be reserved by 9 a.m. the Wednesday before you plan to attend to assure adequate supply. For more information or to reserve a meal, call (563) 880-9991.

The senior meal site will be held once a month, “but if people are interested and keep coming, then we hope to have it twice per month or more,” said Halvorson. “We have to get the word out. Everybody wants to see this succeed.”
