Five MFL MarMac boys wrestlers reached the podium at the Jan. 17 home invitational. Sophomore Tacoma Thompson led the effort, following up an opening round fall with two decisions to win the individual title at 126 pounds.

Teammates Gavin Kishman and Blake Roe both finished third in their respective 150- and 285-pound brackets. Maddox Hanson (132) and Parker Muras (113) each placed fifth.

Bulldogs Anthony Bunting (157), Ben Kite (138), Christian Escobar (165) and Tristan Hoopes (215) did not place.

The tournament followed a busy week of duals for MFL MarMac. The team went 1-1 at an Upper Iowa Conference meet in Monona on Jan. 13, including a narrow 33-30 victory over Janesville. There were three double forfeits between the smaller squads, and the Bulldogs secured forfeits from Bunting, Draven Stuckman and Roe, while Janesville had forfeit victories at 138, 144 and 190 pounds.

Hoopes scored a fall for MFL MarMac and Kishman a technical fall, while Thompson won his match by major decision. Hanson and Muras were both pinned by their opponents.

The Bulldogs lost their other dual 66-10 to South Winneshiek, who benefitted from forfeit wins at seven weights. Muras, Escobar and Hoopes lost by fall and Kishman was on the wrong end of a 5-2 decision. Roe also lost by decision, 10-5.

MFL MarMac picked up points on a Hanson fall and major decision in favor of Thompson.

After that meet, the team earned two more dual wins in a triangular at DeSoto on Jan. 15.

That included a 42-6 score over host DeSoto in the opener. Muras, Hoopes and Roe all supported the effort with falls, then Kite, Kishman, Bunting and Stuckman secured wins by forfeit. DeSoto’s lone points came on a pin against Hanson.

MFL MarMac closed the night with a 51-24 victory against Viroqua. Muras picked up another fall, and Thompson, Hanson, Kishman and Bunting also collected pins. Roe earned a 5-1 decision victory, while Kite, Escobar and Hoopes added to their win totals thanks to forfeits. Viroqua scored its only points off forfeits.

The Bulldogs have no meets or tournaments on the schedule this week. The next noted action is the Upper Iowa Conference Tournament at New Hampton on Saturday, Jan. 31, beginning at 10 a.m.
