Waukon and South Winneshiek handed the Central boys basketball team a pair of Upper Iowa Conference losses last week.

The Warriors got down early at Waukon on Jan. 15, trailing 20-12 after the first quarter and 35-25 at halftime. They outscored the Indians 22-20 in the third period to come within single digits, but went cold offensively down the stretch, putting up only three points to Waukon’s 21. The Indians won 76-50.

Central made 34 percent of its shots, including 11 three-pointers, but couldn’t keep pace with the 58.5 percent clip from the Indians. The Warriors were also hurt by 17 turnovers, while Waukon committed just eight.

Griffen Hammersland led Central with 16 points—12 of them coming from behind the arc. His stat line also included five rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Jake Hertrampf had a trio of three-pointers himself, finishing the game with nine points along with four rebounds, an assist and a steal. He had the team’s only block. Mason Loan contributed eight points, three assists, a rebound and a steal, and Isaac Loan had seven points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Owen Burke chipped in six points off the bench.

The Warriors closed out the week at South Winneshiek on Jan. 16. They started strong, leading 14-11 after the first quarter, but cooled offensively. South Winn went on a 20-8 run before halftime to go up 31-22.

Central stayed within striking distance in the third quarter, down just 48-37 heading into the final period. However, another scoring drought hit to help South Winn to a 64-42 victory.

Griffen Hammersland and Isaac Loan each scored 12 points for the Warriors, while Mason Loan and Owen Hammersland netted five points apiece.

Hertrampf led the team with six rebounds, followed by Owen Hammersland with five and Isaac Loan four.

Mason Loan was the assists leader, at five, then Isaac Loan dished out four.

Owen Hammersland accounted for half of Central’s four steals.

The Warriors are now 7-6 overall and 6-4 in conference play. They remain atop the UIC’s small school division. Two more conference match-ups are on the schedule this week: at home versus Postville on Jan. 20, then at Clayton Ridge on Jan. 23.
