MFL MarMac boys pick up wins over Postville, Kee

The MFL MarMac boys basketball team improved its overall record to 10-4 and Upper Iowa Conference mark to 7-3 with wins over Postville and Kee last week.

 

The Bulldogs defeated the one-win Pirates 78-44 in Postville on Jan. 13, behind 44.4 percent shooting and nine three-pointers.

 

Carter Lightfoot continued his impressive senior season, draining three shots from behind the arc for nine of his team-high 27 points. He also contributed six assists and three rebounds.

 

Fellow senior Wesley Corlett added another double-double next to his name, with 15 points and 10 rebounds. He tied Lightfoot for the team lead in six assists and supported the defense with two steals and a block.

 

Senior Carsten Pester contributed nine points—all on three-pointers—along with four rebounds and two assists. Junior Tristan Bacon knocked down a pair of long-range shots, finishing the night with eight points. His stat line included eight rebounds and two assists as well. Junior Bryce Jones chipped in six points, two rebounds, two steals and an assist off the bench.

 

MFL MarMac followed that up with a 61-45 victory over Kee on Jan. 16. 

 

The teams traded points through the first half, as the Bulldogs clung to an 11-10 lead after the first quarter but finished the second tied 27-27 with the Hawks. They distanced themselves in the second half, however, going on a 14-6 run in the third period, then out-scoring Kee 20-12 in the final frame.

 

The Bulldogs shot 39 percent from the field and landed another eight three-pointers. They were also able to take advantage of 21 Hawk turnovers—11 coming on steals. 

 

Lightfoot unleashed another 20 points—nine coming from long range—and secured a double-double with 11 assists. He also picked up three steals and three rebounds.

 

Corlett finished the game with 14 points, eight rebounds, a steal and four blocks, while senior Eli Hanson added 12 points, three rebounds, an assist, a steal and two blocks. Bacon netted another pair of three-pointers, for six of his eight points, and had four steals and two rebounds. Sophomore Landon Meyer chipped in seven points, three rebounds and a steal off the bench. 

 

MFL MarMac continued UIC play this week, hosting Crestwood Jan. 20 and traveling to Waukon on Jan. 23.
