Last week was a busy one for the MFL MarMac girls wrestling team, who competed in a dual meet as well as a pair of tournaments.

The Bulldogs were 1-1 at an Upper Iowa Conference triangular in Monona on Jan. 13, highlighted by a 36-18 win over Janesville. Kennedy Bachman and Charlotte Koether collected falls at their respective 100- and 130-pound weights, while Aaliyah Corcoran won by 11-9 decision at 105 pounds and Alydia Abel by 6-3 decision at 135. Ayla Ruff (125), Isla Henkes (170) and Hannah Jacobson (190) all won their matches by forfeit.

Janesville’s lone points came on forfeits at 110 and 140 pounds, then a fall over Bulldog Veda Torkelson at 120.

South Winneshiek edged MFL MarMac 36-24 in the other dual. Corcoran and Koether both pinned their opponents, and Bachman and Jacobson had wins by forfeit.

The Warriors benefitted from forfeits at two weights, in addition to falls over Ruff, Torkelson, Abel and Henkes. There were four double forfeits.

Bachman earned her 100th career victory at the meet, cementing her spot as one of the trailblazers of the girls program. The junior has lost just four matches all season and is one of the top-ranked wrestlers in her weight class in the state.

The Bulldogs headed to the Cascade Girls Varsity Invitational on Jan. 15, where they placed ninth among 20 teams with 67.5 points. Bachman and Corcoran were both runners-up in their 100- and 105-pound brackets. Bachman was 3-1 on the day, only losing by 4-0 decision to Audrey Cummings from Wilton in the title bout. Corcoran was 2-1 in her matches.

Koether reached the fourth step on the podium at 125 pounds, while Henkes placed sixth at 170.

Abel, April Upton (190), Jacobson and Torkelson did not place at the tournament.

On Jan. 17, MFL MarMac had six wrestlers on the podium at the tough East Buchanan Marilyn Invitational. Bachman and Corcoran continued to power the team with individual titles. Corcoran won both her matches by fall, while Bachman was 5-0, including two decisions, a fall, a technical fall and a major decision.

Koether and Upton did well with third-place finishes, and Torkelson earned fifth in her weight class. Abel finished the tournament sixth. Ruff, Jacobson and Henkes did not place.

This week, the Bulldogs will test themselves at the Upper Iowa Conference Tournament, held Friday, Jan. 23 at North Fayette Valley.
