The Wauzeka-Steuben girls basketball team used a pair of conference games last week to extend their current winning streak to four games. First up for the Hornets was a trip to Cazenovia last Tuesday, Dec. 16 to take on the new Weston/Ithaca co-op. The visiting Hornets built a 44-20 lead at halftime before outscoring the Silver Eagles 30-19 in the second half enroute to a 74-39 victory.
Seven different Hornets scored in the game with five of those players reaching double figures, led by senior Isabella Bunders’ 16 points. She was followed by senior Macy Mitchell (15 points), ninth-grader Abby Wright (13 points), sophomore Hayley Mitchell (12 points), senior Natalie Wright (11 points), junior Claire Wright (five points) and sophomore Stella Walz (two points). Bunders also led the team in rebounds with 8, while C. Wright led in assists with seven and N. Wright paced the squad in steals with six.
The Hornets returned to their home court three nights later to host the Kickapoo Panthers. Following a close first half that saw the Hornets take a slim 35-30 lead into halftime, Wauzeka-Steuben pulled away early in the second half as they outscored the Panthers 36-15 to earn a 71-45 win. Final stats were not available as of press time.
Wauzeka-Steuben (5-1 overall, 3-0 in the Ridge & Valley Conference) sits in a tie for first place in the conference alongside De Soto (6-2 overall, 4-0). The Hornets are now off until Friday, Jan. 2 when they travel to Brookwood for a non-conference game scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
