Ida Mae (Hanson) Kuntz, 93, was born on the family farm south of Gunder to Otto Hanson and Nellie (Anderson) Hanson on June 23, 1932. She died peacefully in her home in Iowa City on Dec. 2, 2025.

 

Ida grew up on her family farm south of Gunder and graduated from Postville High School. She attended nursing school in Chicago, graduating in 1953. She worked as a VNA nurse in Chicago and Minneapolis before returning to eastern Iowa. Ida and Harold Kuntz were united in marriage on Sept. 3, 1960, at Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder. 

 

Ida worked as a public health nurse in northeast Iowa, serving families in Clayton, Allamakee, Winneshiek, and Fayette counties over the years. She spent the last 10 years of her nursing career establishing the first hospice service in the area.

 

After selling the farm in 2008, they moved to Monona. After Harold’s death in 2016, she moved to Elkader. In 2023, she moved to Iowa City.

 

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Kuntz; son in law, Todd Wiblin; sister-in-law, Helen Meyer; many nieces and nephews; and friend, Vickie Koehn. 

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harold; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Howard and Maxine Hanson and Evelyn Hanson and Otto Jr.; sister Arlene and brother-in-law Loras Heck; brother-in-law Everett Kuntz and sister-in-law Helen Kuntz; nephew Dwight Hanson; and great-nephew Christopher Shykes.

 

Memorial services will be held at Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder on April 25, 2026, with visitation at 10 a.m., with service at 11 a.m. Pastor Marshall Hahn will officiate.

 

Grau Funeral Homes, Monona, is helping the family with the arrangements.
