A pair of close losses to Waukon and South Winneshiek dropped MFL MarMac to 0-2 to start the boys basketball season.
The Bulldogs fell behind by double-digits in the Dec. 2 game versus Waukon, and although they rallied in the second half, the Indians claimed a narrow 54-53 win.
Despite making only two of 12 long-range shots, Waukon had the offensive edge, shooting 42.6 percent overall to MFL MarMac’s 39.6. The Indians were also at the free throw line 23 times compared to the
Bulldogs’ 10—making 12 of the 23.
Senior Carter Lightfoot led the Bulldogs with 16 points—nine of which came via three-pointers. He also contributed six of the team’s 13 assists, had a team-high four steals and snagged five rebounds.
Fellow seniors Wesley Corlett and Eli Hanson netted 11 points and eight rebounds apiece. Corlett tallied four blocks along with two steals and two assists. Hanson had two steals and one assist.
The Dec. 5 game at South Winn was close throughout, as the Warriors led 16-15 after the first quarter and 34-30 at halftime. The score was knotted partway through the third quarter when South Winn created some breathing room, eventually winning 68-62.
The Warriors shot an impressive 50 percent from the field, including eight of 20 from long range. They also out-rebounded the Bulldogs 41-26, limiting second chance scoring opportunities for MFL Mar-Mac.
Lightfoot continued to excel from three-point range, hitting four of nine for 12 of his 30 points. He shot 11 of 25 from the field. Additionally, Lightfoot led the Bulldogs with eight steals and was one of the team leaders with five assists.
Junior Tristan Bacon finished the game with 15 points, after hitting a trio of three-pointers himself, and had three steals and three rebounds. Corlett picked up nine points and eight rebounds, along with six assists, two steals and two blocks.
Now it’s a jam-packed week for MFL MarMac, who played at Edgewood-Colesburg Dec. 8, before home games with North Fayette Valley on Dec. 9 and New Hampton on Dec. 12. The Bulldogs will play Janesville at the Upper Iowa Shootout on Dec. 13.
