A win over Waukon and loss to South Winneshiek last week now has the MFL MarMac girls basketball team 2-1 overall and in the Upper Iowa Conference.

The Bulldogs shot over 46 percent from the field in the 50-33 win over the Indians on Dec. 2. That offensive success, paired with stout defense that limited Waukon to just 13 points in the whole second half, turned a single- digit halftime lead into a double-digit advantage.

Freshman point guard Olivia Driscoll shot 7-9 from the field—including making four of seven three-point attempts—for a team-high 20 points. She also tied the team high with three assists.

Fellow freshman Blair Winter dropped 13 points on 6-8 shooting, and was one of the Bulldog leaders with six rebounds. Junior Emma Driscoll contributed six points, four rebounds, an assist and a team-high seven steals, while senior Cora Keehner finished the night with four points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Unfortunately, theBulldogs couldn’t sustain that winning momentum into a Dec. 5 match-up at South Winn. After falling behind 20-8 in the first quarter, they rallied within three points to trail 22-19 at halftime. A low-scoring third quarter, in which each team scored just four points, didn’t help MFL MarMac gain ground, and the Warriors held them off down the stretch for a 38-34 victory.

MFL MarMac’s offensive output slowed to 23.1 percent in this game, and the team made none of its seven attempts from behind the arc. The Warriors also benefitted from eight more trips to the line, where they made seven of 26 free throws.

Rebounds helped keep the Bulldogs in the game, as they grabbed 47 compared to South Winn’s 26. Winter had nine of those 47, landing her just shy of a double-double with 13 points. She also supposed the defense with three steals and two blocks.

Olivia Driscoll added 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Samantha Ruff chipped in eight points, seven rebounds and three steals off the bench. Emma Driscoll scored no points, but was a rebounding force with 11 total, and also grabbed four steals. Similarly, Keehner tallied seven rebounds and three steals.

This is a busy week for the Bulldogs, who play four games in six days. That included a game at Edgewood-Colesburg on Dec. 8, then home match-ups with North Fayette Valley on Dec. 9 and New Hampton Dec. 12. The team will conclude the week Dec. 13, facing Wapsie Valley in the Upper Iowa Shootout.
