Coach Dianne Langmeier and her River Ridge volleyball team saw their season come to an end last Thursday night with a division 4 regional semifinal loss to visiting Bangor.
The No. 4 seed Timberwolves, who finished the season with an overall match record of 12-10, suffered a 3-1 loss to No. 5 seed Bangor, after both teams received a first-round bye in the postseason tournament.
Coach Langmeier’s squad got off to a slow start last Thursday night, suffering a 25-10 loss to the visiting Cardinals.
River Ridge then gutted out a 26-24 victory in the second set before losing the next two by scores of 25-22 and 25-12.
“It was a game of ups and downs,” explained coach Langmeier. “We had a little trouble with their deep serves in the first game.”
“The second and third games we did a great job of being aggressive and hitting the ball. I would have liked to see us block a little better, but Bangor did a nice job of moving the ball around to make it more challenging for us to block,” Langmeier added.
Senior Ellaina Gage was everywhere Thursday night for the Timberwolves, finishing with a team-high 13 kills, two ace serves and one block.
Junior setter Mallory Crubel led the team with 30 assists to go along with 35 digs, while senior Josey Drone contributed a team-high 45 digs to go along with one ace, one block and two assists.
Drone and Gage, who were both three-year starters for coach Langmeier, concluded their high school volleyball careers last Thursday night, and will undoubtedly be missed by their longtime coach.
“We will definitely miss Josey and Ellaina next year on the court,” said Langmeier. “Their leadership and dedication to our volleyball program has been amazing. They have both been starters for us for the last three years, and it will be hard to replace them.”
