The Warriors managed to run spoiler for the Kee High Hawks’ homecoming this past week.
A 36-28 win at Kee on Sept. 19 propelled the Central football team to a perfect 4-0 overall and 2-0 in district play.
Central Coach J.W. Downs said the game posed a myriad of challenges for the Warriors due to inclement weather that night.
“It’s difficult to stay focused when there are multiple different hurdles to jump. Any win on the road is a great win, but with it being the opposing team’s homecoming, having multiple lightning delays, and finishing the game at almost midnight, it makes the win so much more meaningful,” he said.
The Warrior offense continued to roll in the first quarter, jumping out to a two-touchdown lead over the Hawks. Although Kee scored 14 points of their own in the second quarter, Central tacked on another six to hold a 22-14 edge at halftime.
Both teams came out scoring in the third quarter, adding 14 points apiece before the end zones quieted in the final frame.
Kee High falls to 1-3 on the season with the loss.
Griffen Hammersland led the Warriors, completing 58 percent of his pass attempts for 104 yards and one touchdown, connecting with Braxton Bormann (12 yards), Mason Loan (66 yards) and Owen Hammersland (26 yards).
Owen Hammersland rushed for 78 yards on 19 carries with one touchdown. Loan carried the ball eight times for 61 yards and one touchdown. Bormann (25 yards) and Griffen Hammersland (28 yards) rounded out the team’s rushing attack.
Loan also scored a touchdown off a kick return.
“Mason Loan had a great game, scoring on offense and special teams. One of the best moments was when Braden Taylor was able to scoop up a fumble and take it back for a touchdown,” said Coach Downs.
Quarterback Trey Coda was responsible for all four of the Hawks’ touchdowns, racking up 136 yards and three TDs through the air, then another 44 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
The Warriors will return home on Sept. 26, facing 1-3 Springville starting at 7 p.m. for their homecoming game.
