The Central cross country team hosted its home meet at the Elkader Golf and Country Club on Sept. 18.
According to assistant coach Martha Bauder, all “went extremely well—from the rain that held off, to the multitude of fans who came out to watch and cheer, to the workers who kept everything going so smoothly, to the huge number of fans who participated in the one-mile fun run and, finally, to all the runners who competed so hard and left everything out there on the course.”
The boys varsity team placed second with a score of 43, just 10 points back of winner South Winneshiek. They did it with five runners placing in the top 15, led by Carson Ruegnitz in fourth with a time of 18:26.10. Jesse Polkinghorn, Tyce Zittergruen and Henry Reimer were a respective seventh, ninth and 10th, turning in times of 18:48.40, 19:01.20 and 19:16.30, while Cruz Healy completed the race in 19:29.60 for 13th place. For Reimer, Zittergruen and Healy, those were career bests.
Spots 27 through 29 were filled by Warriors Michael White, Declan Finley and Breckon Holst. White posted a time of 20:40.71, Finley a 20:46.70 and Holst a career best 20:52.50. Next up was Lucas Friedlein in 41st, finishing in a career best 22:21.20, then Corbyn Clark was 46th with a time of 22:50.10—also a career best. Griffin Koehn turned in a 23:58.30 for 54th.
Between White, Finley, Ruegnitz, Polkinghorn and Koehn, there were five course or season bests, noted Bauder.
“Another great accomplishment is that the spread from our first to our fifth runner was just 1:03 and, including our seventh runner, the spread was just two minutes. The boys ran really strong as a group and will continue to get even closer in the meets to come,” Bauder added.
The varsity girls also competed hard, with all five posting either a career or season best. In 11th place, Blair Scherf medaled with a time of 22:42.40. Payton Stannard crossed the line 25th in 25:36.71, followed by Lilly Becwar in 32nd with a 26:48.90. Mya Gregerson put up a 27:31.30 for 36th place, while Hannah Friedlein completed the race in 28:08.90 for 44th place.
This week, the Warriors headed to Waukon on Sept. 23.
