Central opened the cross country season at Edgewood-Colesburg on Aug. 26. It was the first time since 2022 the meet has been held due to extreme heat. That wasn’t the case last week.
“The weather was fantastic for running and for our first meet of the season,” said coach Martha Bauder.
The boys finished sixth out of 14 teams and second among Class 1A schools. Carson Ruegnitz led the Warriors in 19th place with a time of 19:05.1. Jesse Polkinghorn finished in 19:37.4 for 30th place, followed by Tyce Zittergruen in 34th and Henry Reimer 35th with respective times of 19:47.7 and 19:48.5. Cruz Healy took the 47th position after posting a 20:25.1, and Declan Finley was 51st in 20:38.6. With a time of 21:28.2, Michael White was 63rd, then Breckon Holst was 76th with a 22:14.1, Bryce Heller 84th with a 22:50.2, Griffin Koehn 94th with a 23:55.1 and Lukas Friedlein 99th with a 24:19.8.
Since three of the seniors—Heller, Finley and White—were the only athletes who have run this course previously, those three had course PRs.
Bauder said all three were huge PRs, “cutting more than five minutes from their freshman year.”
Another great comparison for the team members was that eight runners from last season ran considerably faster than last year’s first meet, said Bauder, “even though our first meet was actually a week later in the season.”
Those runners were Reimer, Polkinghorn, Zittergruen, Holst and Koehn, as well as girls Lilly Becwar, Blair Scherf and Mya Gregerson.
“Newcomers Payton Stannard, Lukas Friedlein and Cruz Healy also had great times for the first meet of their careers,” added Bauder.
Scherf turned in the top time for the girls, with a 23:10.5, and finished 27th. Stannard was 64th with a 26:38.1, Becwar 72nd with a 28:22.1 and Gregerson 79th with a 28:59.3. Hannah Friedlein came in 91st after running a time of 32:30.7.
The girls placed eighth out of 13 teams and third among Class 1A teams.
Central will run next on Thursday, Sept. 4, at the MFL MarMac invitational at Tri City Golf Course near Luana.
