In a meet head coach Eric Koenig said would be a good early test, the MFL MarMac girls cross country team passed with flying colors, securing a third-place team finish at the Aug. 26 Edgewood-Colesburg Invitational.

The Bulldogs’ score of 78 trailed only the 35 put up by Waukon—the fifth ranked team in Class 2A, according to the Iowa Association of Track Coaches—then South Winneshiek’s 67. The Warriors are the second ranked team in Class 1A.

Normally cancelled due to heat, this was the first time runners hit the Ed-Co course in several years. For top Bulldog finisher McKenna Kozelka, it was her first career meet. The junior made the most of it, turning in a time of 21:28.7 for seventh place. Nakia Ollivierre from Waterloo West won the race with a 19:12.0.

Kozelka’s MFL MarMac teammate Charlotte Meyer came in 21st with a time of 22:41.2, two spots ahead of another newcomer, Evie Fritz, who finished in 22:53.4. Cora Keehner and Brooke Donlon were a respective 31st and 32nd with times of 23:32.0 and 23:33.8, while Kennedy Bachman’s 23:46.5 ranked her 37th. Emma Grau turned in a 24:07.3, good for 40th in her first varsity race, then Brooklyn Landt and Taryn Moser were 48th and 49th with times of 24:51.4 and 24:58.3. Aaliyah Corcoran was a close 51st after finishing in 25:12.1.

Also running strong races were Skylar Fisk in 54th in 25:42.0, Brynlee Fritz 58th in 25:56.8, Samantha Ruff 60th in 26:33.1, Kacie Picha 61st in 26:36.5, Lauryn Sandstrom 73rd in 28:29.5, Charlotte Koether 74th in 28:32.8, Emma Driscoll 75th in 28:36.4, Jerica Wille 84th in 30:05.0 and Mariah Moser 98th in 35:36.8.

Freshman Trace Moser led the MFL MarMac boys, running the course in 21:06.8 for 57th place. Fellow freshman Jude Onken finished 72nd with a time of 22:05.0, followed by junior Adian Reynolds in 75th with a 22:12.8. Wolfgang Martins-Sabrina took the 83rd spot, thanks to a time of 22:49.0, then sophomore Payton Schultz finished in 26:35.3, placing him 109th.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 4, for their home meet at Tri City Golf Course near Luana.
