A McGregor native has joined the Mar-Mac Police Department. Cyrus Johnson began duty as an officer at the end of June, and is so far enjoying learning more about the profession before he heads to the academy in September.

Johnson graduated from MFL MarMac in 2024. He said law enforcement wasn’t his original career goal.

“I was actually planning on going into the automotive field, and was also planning on going into the military after that,” he shared. “I never actually intended on joining law enforcement. It was just something that came across my path.”

Johnson was encouraged to apply for the officer position by a co-worker at Casey’s General Store in Marquette, Patricia Cornell, who’s a member of the Marquette City Council and Mar-Mac Public Safety Commission.

Cornell got Mar-Mac Police Chief Robert Millin on the phone, and Johnson was able to speak with him and officer Tyler Zach.

“They said, ‘Just spend the day with us, try it out and see if you like it.’ I went on multiple ride-alongs,” Johnson recalled.

In the first few weeks on the job, Johnson has been involved in a lot of traffic enforcement, “and lately we’ve been getting into a few more calls.”

“It’s a completely different world from just your average civilian. There are so many different things to learn and watch out for. It can be a lot more stressful than I was thinking it would be,” Johnson acknowledged.

Johnson is excited to serve the communities in which he grew up.

“I always enjoy connecting with the community and getting to know different people and all the different businesses. I’m looking forward to learning more, getting more comfortable and getting out and about.”
