October 19, 1970-July 26, 2025
Joey J. “Joe” Mason, age 54 of Prairie du Chien, WI passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at his home. He was born on Oct. 19, 1970, to James “Jim” and Karen (Kelch) Mason. Joe grew up in Marquette, IA and graduated from MFL-Mar Mac High School with the class of 1989. Joe married Robbie Hinkel on Sept. 21, 1996, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in McGregor, Iowa. Joe served on the Prairie du Chien Rescue Squad and worked for the Crawford County Highway Dept. for many years.
Joe was a true outdoorsman who felt most at peace in nature. He loved nothing more than heading out hunting or fishing with his son, brother, nephew, or cousins. Those moments meant the world to him. Growing up as the youngest of five, he was always called the “baby brother,” even though he ended up being the strongest of them all.
Joe never met a stranger — he was the kind of guy who’d strike up a conversation with anyone and offer help, advice, or support whether they needed it or not. People all over the tri-state area knew him for his booming voice and those unforgettable bear hugs.
If you ask his daughter, he was the handiest and smartest guy she knew. No matter how big or small the job he had the fix. Joe was always there when someone needed a hand. But more than anything, family was what mattered most to him. Whether it was spending time with his wife or spending time with his brother and kids at the Butternut, those were the moments he cherished most.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years Robbie; children Tyler (Jackie) Mason and Molly (Tyler Nack) Mason; Father Jim (Janis) Mason; siblings Dawn (Bob) Brus, Jim (Jane) Mason, Darcy (Terry) Dickens, and John (Tracy) DeLong; granddaughter Mabel; step-father Howard Schaefer; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Karen Schaefer; niece Samantha Dickens; and Cousin Charlie “Jeff” Mason.
Friends may call at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church on Thursday July 31, 2025 from 9 a.m. until the time of service at noon with private inurnment at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family. www.garrityfuneralhome.com.
