Helena R. Davis, 72, of Volga, died on Tuesday morning, July 1, 2025, with her family by her side, after a brief illness.

 

Helena Rose Grocholski was born Sept. 24, 1952, in Oelwein, the daughter of Wasyl and Rosa (Hrynczyszyn) Grocholski.  She was raised in Elkader and graduated from Central Community High School in the class of 1970. She continued her education in cosmetology in Decorah. Helena worked in several area factories and lived at rural Elgin with her son, Brian. She then worked at several restaurants as a waitress and cook. It was at this time she developed her skills as an excellent cook and baker.  

 

Helena was united in marriage to Paul Vernon Davis on July 23, 1993, in Las Vegas, Nev. They lived at rural Volga and then moved to town in 2002. Helena and Paul purchased L.D.’s Lounge in Volga and operated it for several years. She later did housekeeping and elder care for others in the community. Helena enjoyed horseback riding in her early years. She also enjoyed finding a bargain at a garage sale, cooking, baking and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

 

Helena is survived by her husband, Paul Davis, of Volga; son, Brian (Jenni) Grocholski of Lamont; four grandchildren, Billy (Ashley) Grocholski of Titonka, Brandon Grocholski (Sidney) of Strawberry Point, Morgan (Eric) Heims of Edgewood and Brantley Grocholski of Lamont; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Kathy Grocholski of Volga; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Helena was preceded in death by her grandmother, parents and two brothers, Myron and Jim Grocholski.

 

Visitation was July 6 and the funeral service July 7 at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Arlington with Vicar Dorothee Caspari officiating. Interment was at Hillcrest Cemetery, Volga.
