The Central softball team picked up one win in the final week of the regular season, splitting a June 30 doubleheader against Postville.
The Pirates, who also came into the series without a victory this season, won their first game in 15 years in game one. It was a high-scoring contest, with both teams putting up double-digit runs, but the Pirates held off multiple rallies by the Warriors to win 23-14.
Oakley Armstrong led the Warriors with three hits and also reached on an error. She drove in a run and scored twice. Reese Berns singled and doubled, walked twice and scored two runs. Mylee Mueller tripled, walked and crossed home plate twice. Blair Scherf scored a team-high three runs after walking twice and reaching once on an error.
The Warriors bounced back in game two, putting together four multi-run innings and out-scoring the Pirates 16-5.
Central racked up 14 hits, including three from Tenley Bormann, who also scored two runs. Scherf and Armstrong each singled and doubled, driving in three runs apiece and scoring three times themselves. Berns was on base four times with a single, triple, hit by pitch and error, then stole a base and scored twice.
The Warriors wrapped up the regular season with a July 2 doubleheader versus MFL MarMac Bulldogs, losing both games 13-4 and 14-3.
Central earned seven hits in the opener, three of them coming from Armstrong, who scored one run. Savannah Orr singled twice, reached on an error, stole two bases and scored a run. Payton Stannard drove in a run on one hit and also scored.
In game two, Stannard singled, reached on an error and scored a run. Scherf and Armstrong each had hits, and Scherf stole a base. Tenley Meyer accounted for the team’s fourth hit, walked and scored a run.
Central concluded the regular season 1-22 overall and 1-15 in the Upper Iowa Conference, tying with Postville. The Warriors played July 7 in the Class 1A - Region 5 playoff opener against the Don Bosco Dons, losing 10-0. More information from that game will be in next week's edition.
