MFL MarMac went 2-1 in the final week of the baseball regular season, snagging wins over Clayton Ridge-Central and Waukon but losing to Marquette Catholic.
The Bulldogs relied on later inning scoring to defeat Clayton Ridge-Central 6-3 in Monona on June 30. Kade Humble collected two of the team’s 10 hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. He also scored once himself. Leadoff hitter Parker Kuehl drove in a run on two hits, stole a base and scored. Ben Krambeer and Jaron Wille both had RBI-doubles. Wille also walked and scored a run. Brayden Gordon reached base three times on a double and pair of walks. He was responsible for two of MFL MarMac’s five stolen bases and scored a run.
Jaxon Millage pitched the opening four innings. Despite giving up seven walks and hitting a batter, he limited the WarEagles to just one hit and three earned runs while striking out six batters. Krambeer and Wille had perfect innings of work, and Humble surrendered just a walk in one inning on the mound.
The Bulldogs suffered just their sixth loss of the season, 13-3 at Marquette Catholic, on July 1. MFL MarMac scored twice in the opening frame, but the Defenders responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, then continued tacking on through the sixth. The Defenders racked up 13 hits against the Bulldogs and benefitted from nine free passes.
Offensively, MFL MarMac totaled five hits, but reached base in other ways: seven times on walks, once on an error and three times due to a hit batter. Once on base, players swiped four bases.
Krambeer was 2-3 with two RBIs, while Tyce Wikner had an RBI-double. Kuehl singled, walked twice, stole a pair of bases and scored a run.
MFL MarMac edged Waukon 4-1 in the July 2 regular season finale. The Bulldogs broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning, then pushed two more runs across in the fifth.
Kuehl threw a strong six innings, allowing five hits, but just one run, and striking out four Indians. Krambeer had a one-two-three inning to close the game.
Kuehl and Krambeer were also offensive factors, with Kuehl going 2-3 with a walk, four stolen bases and two runs scored, while Krambeer contributed an RBI-single. Wille singled twice and drove in a run, and Wikner earned two hits, a sacrifice and a stolen base.
MFL MarMac finished the regular season 21-6 and 15-3 in the Upper Iowa Conference, just a game behind champion Kee.
The Bulldogs were slated to begin postseason play July 5, in a home match-up with Postville, but the game was postponed to July 7 due to weather. A win would pit MFL MarMac against recent foe Marquette Catholic on July 8, at Beckman Catholic High School.
