Carol R. Gaul, 78, of Guttenberg, passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at MercyOne Medical Center in Dubuque.

Visitation was Friday, June 20, at Kramer-Morris Funeral Home in Holy Cross.

Funeral services were Saturday, June 21, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Luxemburg, conducted by Rev. Tyler Raymond.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Carol was born on Dec. 21, 1946, in Farley, daughter of Albert and Mary (Miller) Hildebrand. She married David J. Gaul on May 20, 1967, in Farley and together they raised their 5 children on the family farm. Carol worked many different jobs over her life such as a CNA, farming for several years in Guttenberg and then owned and managed Doug’s Steakhouse for 10 years. During retirement, she enjoyed her morning coffee friends. Carol had a heart of gold, which shined through with her volunteer work with teaching religious education, helping with bingo at the Guttenberg Care Center and made tie blankets for her grandchildren and to donate. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She loved baking and sharing all of her goodies with family and friends, making her famous crab salad and homemade soup. She was also known for playing an intense game of euchre at every get together. 

Survivors include her husband, David; children, Lisa (Ken) Wille of Holy Cross, Joe (Sharon) Gaul of Dyersville, Jeff (Peggy) Gaul of Cascade, Tim (Kari) Gaul of Guttenberg and Jim (Joy) Gaul of Holy Cross; 15 grandchildren, Luke (Keri Knipper), Leah (Josef Vonhandorf) and Dusty (Meriah Martin) Wille, Tirzah (Chayce Alexander), Quinton and Vanessa (Jake Even) Gaul, Ellie, Patrick and Faith Gaul, Abby, Hailey and Tyler Gaul, Claire, Colton and Lydia Gaul; siblings, Cathy (Roger) Bartles of Durango, Verna (Vessie) Klostermann of Edgewood, Norma (Dick) Kelchen of Farley, Steve Hildebrand of Dyersville and Rick (Donna) Hildebrand of Texas; in-laws, Paul (Joyce) Wagner, Helen Hildebrand, Phyllis Hildebrand, Dave Shaw, Helen Hildebrand, Marlene Koppes, Elaine Hildebrand, Kelly Hildebrand and Deb Gaul.

She was preceded in death by her parents and parents-in-law, Joe and Stella Gaul; siblings, Ruth Hildebrand, Joyce Hildebrand, Gladys Hildebrand, Mary Milligan, Bob Hildebrand, Jerry Hildebrand, Leonard Hildebrand, Loras Hildebrand, Tom Hildebrand and Albert Hildebrand; in-laws, Elaine Shaw, Verna (Ray) Greenwood, Connie (Bernie) Maiers and Donald Gaul. 

Carol will be greatly missed by all who were blessed by her generous and kind spirit. 

The family would like to thank the coffee/card group, Guttenberg Nursing Home, Guttenberg Hospital, MercyOne Hospital in Dubuque and all the nurses, especially Sara and CNAs, especially Mike.
