Edith Rankin, 96, of Marshalltown, passed away on the morning of Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Bickford Cottage in Marshalltown under the care of Iowa River Hospice, surrounded by family. 

Memorial services were Thursday, May 29, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, conducted by Pastor Bryan Kunz. Visitation was held before services. 

Edith Marie Rankin was born Oct. 20, 1928, in Mason City. Edith was the daughter of Earl and Marie (Fritz) McDonald. She graduated from Waverly High School and from the Iowa State Teacher’s College with a BA in Education. She taught in Guttenberg, Green Mountain, State Center and Marshalltown School Districts. 

Edith was united in marriage to Donald Rankin in Maquoketa on Jan. 18, 1951. She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star (Guttenberg). Additionally, she belonged to the 20th Century Club, an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Souvenier Club.

Those left to remember and cherish her memory are her children, Jeff (Cheryl) Rankin and Greg Rankin; grandchildren, Sonia (Michael) Guynes and Sara (Todd) McAnulty; great-grandchildren, Kodi Bachman, Levi Hernandez, Caleb Hernandez, Kinnick McAnulty, Kieler McAnulty and Joy Hernandez. Additionally, she is survived by one brother, Rick Eggelston and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Rankin, who passed away in 2002; her mother, Marie (Everett) Eggleston and father, Earl McDonald; sisters, Jeannie (Lou) Safranek, Ann (Tom) Murphy, Vernita Kruger and Neva Welter; and brother, John (Donna) McDonald.

The family wishes to thank the friendly faces and staff at Bickford Cottage in Marshalltown for the exceptional care given to Edith over the last year.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Edith’s name may be designated to the First Presbyterian Church in Marshalltown, Marshalltown Public Library, Meals on Wheels, and Marshalltown Emergency Food Box.
