With conference and district meets fast approaching, the Central girls track and field team continued putting the pieces together at two meets last week, the first at being the Waukon Girls Indian Relays on April 29.
The Warriors competed in 17 events in varsity and junior varsity combined, coming away with multiple top-five finishes and several personal records. Reese Berns was a medalist with her third-place finish in the long jump, while Natalya Singleton was second in the JV discus competition.
Singleton additionally took placed fourth in the JV 100-meter dash and was sixth in the varsity shot put. Blair Scherf earned the Warriors another fourth-place effort with a season best time of 1:08.10 in the 400-meter dash, then added a fifth-place finish in the discus.
There were several more fifth-place results in the relays, including the 4x400 with Scherf, Berns, Ella Frieden and Alivia Wiley and the 4x800 with Scherf, Berns, Coral Rork and Layla Embretson.
The JV 4x200 of Mya Gregerson, Makenzie Thorson, Coral Rork and Aspen Rork achieved another top-five finish, and three of those runners—Thorson, Aspen Rork, and Gregerson—along with Isabella Schmidt, took seventh in the JV sprint medley.
In the varsity sprint medley, the Warriors were sixth with Payton Stannard, Tenley Bormann, Maci Keppler and Becwar. Central earned two more sixth-place times in varsity relays, first in the 4x100 with Keppler, Stannard, Bormann and Schmidt, then in the 4x200 with Stannard, Bormann, Embretson and Keppler.
In individual events, Hannah Friedlein ran to fifth in the JV 400-meter dash and Lily Becwar was fifth in the JV 200, where she set a personal record. Frieden set a personal record in the 100 with a seventh-place time of 14.56 seconds, and she was a matching seventh in the 200. Embretson finished sixth in the discus.
“Our string of decent weather continued at Waukon, so it was great to get another meet in. Another chance for the girls to make progress toward their goals and for us to continue putting together the information we need to start making decisions toward our conference and district meets,” said coach Martha Bauder.
On May 1, the Warriors found themselves at MFL MarMac for the final meet of the week, and had a successful day with three medalists.
Berns won her second medal of the week in the long jump, thanks to a fourth-place result, and Scherf was second in the 1500-meter run, while teammate Aspen Rork set a new personal record time of 6:26.76, almost 10 seconds under her previous best time, to finish seventh.
The Warriors also earned a team medal with a second-place distance medley relay that featured Stannard, Frieden, Berns and Scherf.
Along with the medal, Berns ran a season-best time of 29.48 seconds in the 200-meter dash to finish in third place, while Alexis Thiese finished the race seventh. Coral Rork achieved a season-best 13:46.26 in the 3000, which was good for fourth, and teammate Friedlein was seventh.
The Warriors finished inside the top five numerous other times. Embretson and Gregerson achieved the feat in the 400-meter dash, where Embretson took fourth and Gregerson set a personal record in fifth. Brooke Tieden also took fourth place in the high jump, and the 4x400-relay of Scherf, Becwar, Embretson and Frieden was fourth.
In the 4x200, Becwar, Schmidt, Aspen Rork and Bormann finished fifth. Bormann and Becwar were also part of the fifth-place sprint medley team with Stannard and Frieden. The 4x100-relay with Stannard, Schmidt, Savannah Orr and Bormann finished sixth.
In other events, Embretson threw for 97 feet to finish sixth in the discus, followed by Scherf in eighth. Coral Rork and Friedlein both ran the 800, finishing in seventh and eighth, respectively. In the 100-meter dash, Thiese finished 10th, while Keppler set a personal record to finish 11th.
“The weather was a bit chilly, but no rain and not much wind. We had a good meet amongst mostly 1A schools and I feel as though we competed hard,” Bauder said.
The Warriors have two meets this week, starting May 5 at Edgewood-Colesburg, then at MFL MarMac on May 8 for the Upper Iowa Conference meet.
