The Central boys track and field team continued to have early-season success last week with two more top five-finishes as a team, starting with a fifth-place result in the Ed-Co Boys Invite and fourth place in the 33rd annual Postville Foster-Kiesau meet. Across both events, the team compiled 29 personal records.
At Ed-Co on April 8, the Warriors scored 70 points, just four points shy of third place. In the sprint races, Central couldn’t crack the top 10 in the 100- or 200-meter dash, as Jacob Cook finished 18th and Corbyn Clark 20th in the 100, while Cook placed 23rd and Tyce Zittergruen 26th in the 200. However, they crowded the top 10 in the 400, as Henry Reimer finished third in 56.92 seconds, followed by Carson Ruegnitz in fourth and Zittergruen seventh.
The Warriors put up multiple top fives in the distance races, including a victory in the 800-meter run by Gavin Holst, who cleared the field by four seconds. Jesse Polkinghorn crossed the line third, while Ruegnitz was sixth. Holst added a third-place finish in the 1600 and Polkinghorn was ninth. Michael White provided a sixth-place result in the 3200.
Central struggled to clear the hurdles, though, as Zane Embretson was 12th in the 110-meter race and Breckon Holst and Carter Krugger were 14th and 15th in the 400 meters. Central finished sixth in the 4x110-meter shuttle hurdle relay.
The relays remain a strength for the Warriors, including a second-place run in the 4x800. They added fourth place in the 4x100 and fifth in the 4x200. The 4x400 was a seventh-place finish, and in the medleys, they were eighth in the 800-sprint medley and seventh in the 1600-distance.
The highlight of the field events was Mason Loan’s long jump of 19-02.75 feet, which was a career best and good for second place. Clark finished ninth in the high jump and Julian Singleton was 14th in the discus.
On April 10, the Warriors earned a fourth-place finish in Postville, scoring 84 points and showing much improvement across all events.
The sprints saw several top-10 runs, including two in the 100-meter dash, with Vaughn Zittergruen running it in 12.11 seconds for ninth place. Cook was right behind Zittergruen in 10th. Loan scored a sixth-place finish in the 200-meter dash in 24.71 seconds, eight-tenths out of first place, while Owen Hammersland was ninth in 25.67 seconds. Vaughn Zittergruen additionally took fourth in the 400, followed by younger brother Tyce in seventh.
With Holst’s racing schedule limited due to a sore hip, Polkinghorn shined in the distance races, putting together a second-place run in the 800 in 2:15.98 and a fourth-place finish in the 1600. Ruegnitz also competed in the 800, placing third, and he was fifth in the 3200. Declan Finley took part in the 1600, coming in right behind Polkinghorn in fifth, followed by White in sixth.
The Warriors performed a bit better in the hurdle events, with the addition of Griffen Hammersland putting in a fourth-place run in the 400-meter race. Breckon Holst finished eighth. Central also took fourth in the 4x110-meter shuttle hurdle relay, but couldn’t crack the top five in the 110-meter hurdles, with Embretson coming in eighth and Krugger ninth.
Central did break into the top five in the 800-sprint medley relay, in fifth place, while a highlight of the meet was winning the distance medley by 14 seconds over Turkey Valley.
The Warriors put in solid results in the other relays too, including second place in the 4x800 and third in the 4x400. They placed fourth in the 4x200 and sixth in the 4x100.
The field events were also a source of improvement for Central, with Loan earning a third-place distance in the long jump and Clark taking sixth. Owen Hammersland put up a mark of 38-00.00 to take third in the shot put, and Cook finished fifth. Central added two more top 10s in the discus, with Singleton placing fifth and Elias White seventh. In the high jump, Hertrampf was fifth.
According to the Bound website, the Warriors have three meets this week, with the first April 14 in Decorah, followed by another April 15 in Central City. The week concludes April 17 at West Delaware.
