City council sets date for public hearing on budget
At a special meeting on March 24, the Guttenberg city council set April 14 at 6 p.m. for the for a public hearing on adopting the budget for the coming fiscal year.
As prescribed by Iowa law, the meeting was preceded by a public hearing on the proposed property tax levy. No comments were received.
The proposed budget calls for $37,611,452 in expenditures and $38,845,135 in revenues, with a tax levy rate of 15.24932 per $1,000 valuation. The proposed tax levy represents a decrease from the current year levy of 15.44826.
In other business, Austin Coon of the Guttenberg Economic and Industrial Development Committee (GEIDC) held a discussion with the council, giving an update on the financial status of the new Community Resource Center and plans for fund-raising and grants to pay off remaining debt. He also opened a discussion about the city's Revolving Loan Fund, which is currently administered by the city but was formerly under the aegis of the GEIDC several decades ago. He proposed that the fund be returned to the GEIDC, and said the end goal would be to build it up. The loan fund is used to stimulate business growth. The matter was tabled pending a legal review of returning the RLF to the GEIDC.
The council heard a request from the Clayton Ridge Youth Sports group, represented by Jon Thomas, on new batting cages for Veterans Field and Darwin Duwe Field. The city recreation board reviewed the request and recommended approval. Thomas said the improvements would be paid for by grants and fund-raising projects. The council approved a city donation to the project in the form concrete work and materials.
The council okayed continuing with the same vendor for rec field concession stands.
