Timberwolves earn pair of wins

A 48-25 victory over visiting Highland last Thursday night, improved Veronica Zinkle’s River Ridge girls basketball team to a Six Rivers West conference record of 6-6, while improving to 13-7 overall.
With conference games against Benton (0-12, 0-21), Black Hawk (5-6, 11-9) and Belmont (9-3, 13-5) remaining on their schedule, the Timberwolves currently sit third in the Six Rivers West league standings behind Belmont and Shullsburg (8-4, 14-6).
Against the visiting Cardinals, Ava Nies led River Ridge with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor, including 2-of-4 from long distance. The freshman also pulled down two rebounds and had two steals.
Mandi Wehrle, who was 4-of-8 from downtown, chipped in 12 points, six boards, three assists and a team-high six steals, while Braylyn Quick and Melissa Sletten each finished with five points.
As a team the Timberwolves made 19-of-62 (30.6 percent) shot attempts, including 9-of-29 (31 percent) from 3-point range.
In non-conference action last Monday evening, the Lady Timberwolves hosted Boscobel, sending them home with a convincing 65-14 loss.
Leading the Timberwolves with 18 points was Wehrle, who knocked down 4-of-5 3-point attempts and was 6-of-11 from the field. Wehrle also led the team with seven steals, as the Timberwolves finished with 25.
Reghan Zinkle chipped in 13 points and six boards, while Melissa Sletten added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Lydia Mason 11 points and four boards.
