Last week was a disappointing end to the dual season for the MFL MarMac boys wrestling team, who dropped all three duals at a Feb. 7 home quad.
Forfeits were a major factor for the Bulldogs, who didn’t have a wrestler at 106, 120, 126, 157 and 190 pounds in any of the duals.
Postville defeated MFL MarMac 48-29 in the opening dual, buoyed by four forfeit victories as well as falls by Karl Peters over John Martins at 150 pounds, Landon Guese over Caleb Zuercher at 175, Sam Acevedo over Dracen Howe at 215 and Antoni Solovi over Gage Paulus at heavyweight.
Tacoma Thompson led the Bulldogs’ cause by pinning Michael Hill at 113 pounds, while 144-pound Rylan Schroeder earned a technical fall over Pirate Isaiah Burns. Quinn McGeough (165), Keith Anderson (132) and Gavin Kishman (138) won via forfeit.
In addition to six forfeit victories, Waukon came out on top in five other matches in a 66-18 dual win over MFL MarMac. Zuercher, Howe, Anderson, Schroeder and Martins were all pinned.
McGeough and Kishman earned falls in their respective matches, and heavyweight Will Howes secured a win by forfeit.
MFL MarMac’s closest dual was a 43-30 loss to Clayton Ridge to close out the meet. The Eagles benefitted from four forfeit wins at 106, 120, 132 and 157 pounds, while the Bulldogs picked up three at 165, 175 and 215. There was a double forfeit at 190.
Anderson was pinned at 132 pounds, and Kishman followed with a 12-4 major decision loss at 138. Schroeder was on the wrong end of a 12-5 decision at 144 pounds and Martins lost his 150-pound bout by fall. Howes was a bright spot for MFL MarMac, with a pin at 285, and after missing the Waukon dual, Thompson returned with a 34-second fall at 113 pounds.
MFL MarMac will take the mat next at the Class 1A - District 5 tournament in Monona on Saturday, Feb. 15. Matches begin at 10 a.m., with the top two wrestlers in each weight class advancing to state.
