Bachman, Koether show heart at state tournament

MFL MarMac wrestlers Mackenzie Bachman and Charlotte Koether concluded their seasons at the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union girls state wrestling tournament in Coralville last week.
This was the second state appearance for Bachman, a senior, since girls wrestling was sanctioned. She entered the tournament with a record of 33-7 and seeded 11th at 125 pounds in Class 1A, after placing second at regionals the week prior.
In the opening match against sixth-seeded Ellexis Stephens, the eventual Class 1A runner-up, Bachman scored an early takedown. Stephens picked up two points off a reversal in the first period and two more in the second. She had a takedown in the third period and pinned Bachman with less than 30 seconds left in the match.
Bachman rebounded from the loss in her next match, defeating third-seeded Camden Erhardt of Vinton-Shellsberg by first period fall. That set Bachman up against 13 seed Amelia Walk of Saint Ansgar, who edged her 3-2 and ended the senior’s tournament run.
Koether, a freshman, qualified for state at 130 pounds following an exciting regional run that included winning a wrestleback for second place. She came into action with a 29-18 record, seeded 15th in Class 1A.
Her first round opponent was undefeated Jillian Worthen from Union Community, who rattled off an early takedown and multiple near falls en route to a 15-0 technical fall win. Worthen was the eventual 130-pound champion.
On the back side of the bracket, Koether faced 10th seed Haylee Sherman of Saydel, who won by 12-2 decision and ended Koether’s season.
