MFL MarMac senior Quinn McGeough is the 2025 Upper Iowa Conference boys wrestling champion at 165 pounds. McGeough won both his matches by fall at the tournament—held Jan. 30 at Riceville—and improved his season record to 30-2.
Two other Bulldogs—Tacoma Thompson and Will Howes—were runners-up in their respective weight classes. Wrestling at 113 pounds, Thompson earned a technical fall and 12-8 decision to advance to the first-place match, but lost by sudden victory to Darinel Ramirez of Postville. It was only the freshman’s sixth loss.
Howes was among a stacked field of heavyweights. The junior pinned Henry Wiley of South Winneshiek in the quarterfinals, then edged familiar foe Antoni Solovi of Postville in the semifinal match. North Fayette Valley’s Layne Kleppe, who was undefeated and handed Howes one of his two losses this season, got the best of Howes again with a 1-0 win in the championship bout.
At 144 pounds, sophomore Rylan Schroeder had a third-place finish. He opened the tournament with a fall, and after getting pinned by NFV’s Tate Germann in the semifinals, rebounded in the consolation semis with a fall over Derek Deitchler of Central/Ed-Co. Schroeder ended the night with a 10-2 major decision victory over Anthony Sandoval of Clayton Ridge.
Sophomore Gavin Kishman and senior Keith Anderson also finished the tournament on the third step of the podium. Kishman earned a fall in his opening match at 138 pounds, but was tech falled by NFV’s Jaxson Lundgren in the semis. He took down Brendan Walvatne of Tripoli 15-0 in the consolation semis to advance to the third-place match. There, Kishman bested Clayton Ridge’s Kenny Colsch 10-7.
After an opening bye, Anderson was pinned by Asher Ebert of Riceville in the 132-pound semifinal. He responded with a fall over Cooper Brown of Central/Ed-Co in the consolation semis, then secured another fall, this time against Fernando Flores of Clayton Ridge, to win the final match of the night.
Caleb Zuercher lost both his matches at 190 pounds and Dracen Howe was 0-2 at 215. Both placed fifth at the tournament. John Martins was pinned twice in his 150-pound bouts and did not place.
The North Fayette Valley TigerHawks were the run away Upper Iowa Conference team champions, after compiling a score of 259.5. Seven of their wrestlers were individual conference champs and four more were runners-up.
Host Riceville finished second with 176.5, followed by Postville at 139.5 and MFL MarMac at 116.
McGeough also tops podium at weekend tournament
Quinn McGeough followed up his conference championship with another tournament title at the Doug Trees Bearcat Invitational at North Butler on Feb. 1. McGeough won his first three matches by fall, before a medical forfeit took out his final opponent, Cody Cox of Lake Mills.
Multiple Bulldogs placed fourth in their respective weight classes, including Tacoma Thompson at 113 pounds, Gavin Kishman at 138 and Will Howes at heavyweight. Keith Anderson wrestled to fifth place at 132 pounds, and Rylan Schroeder and Caleb Zuercher were sixth in their 144- and 190-pound brackets. Dracen Howe did not place at 215.
MFL MarMac wraps up the regular season this week, hosting Waukon, Clayton Ridge and Postville for duals on Feb. 7. It’s also senior night.
