Gary L. Carlson, 86, of Elkader, passed away Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025, at MercyOne in Elkader. He was born Nov. 27, 1938, in Rockford, Ill., to June Virginia (Quist) Carlson and Axel H. Carlson.
Gary graduated from East High School in Rockford, Ill., and went on to serve in the U.S. Army until he was injured in Germany.
He was united in marriage to Kathleen McMullen on Aug. 10, 1963, at Bernadette's, Rockford, Ill.
Gary worked at the Rockford Register Star for over 38 years, where he served as a photojournalist and chief photographer. His photos were seen across the county through the Associated Press and won numerous awards. He was very active in the St. Rita Parish, where he taught high school CCD.
Gary always tried to learn new things through his many hobbies, from fish to models, orchids and wood working.
He is survived by his wife Kathleen, and daughter Suzanne (Terry) Johnson, all of Elkader; sons, Greg Carlson and David (Cheri) Carlson; brother, Terry (Sharon) Carlson; brothers in law, Edwin (Gayle) McMullen and Dennis (Janet) McMullen; as well as six grandchildren, Kristin, Mathew, Emma, Joey, Bailey and Brandon; great-grandchildren, Mason and Ellie; and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Axel and June Carlson, and brother-in-law, James Mc Mullen.
The family would like to thank all those who took such great care of Gary while living at the Elkader Care Center and the staff at Mercy One Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mercy One Elkader Foundation or Elkader EMS.
Visitation was held Jan. 17, with a vigil service, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader. Mass of the Resurrection was Jan. 18, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader, with Rev. John Haugen as celebrant.
Inurnment with military honors will take place in the spring.
Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elkader is assisting the family.
