The Wauzeka-Steuben Hornets girls basketball team displayed few signs of a long lay off in their non-conference game against the Brookwood Falcons last Friday night. Playing for the first time since Dec. 20, the Hornets opened the game by taking a 18-0 lead before the Falcons were finally able to get on the scoreboard with a free throw with 9:08 remaining in the first half. Wauzeka-Steuben would go on to take a 49-10 halftime lead before earning a 67-30 win to improve to 7-1 on the season. Brookwood dropped to 4-6 with the loss.
The Brookwood (Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton) School District was coming off a tough week after the sudden passing of Norwalk Elementary School principal Ken Manning on Friday, Dec. 27. Manning, the former head wrestling coach at Lancaster and Westby High Schools and the operator of Western Wisconsin Video Productions (a long-time broadcaster of many area sporting events including regional and state legion baseball tournaments) passed away suddenly at home due to an apparent heart attack at the age of 68.
The Hornets welcomed Highland to town last night for a non-conference contest. Wauzeka-Steuben returns to conference play this Friday night when they host La Farge/Youth Initiative at 7:15 pm.
