The Wauzeka-Steuben Hornets boys basketball team opened up the new year last Thursday night by hosting the Ithaca Bulldogs in a game that was originally scheduled for Dec. 19 but postponed due to weather.
A close, but low scoring first half saw the Hornets jump out to an early 8-2 lead before the Bulldogs slowly worked their way back into the game to take a 14-13 lead with 3:43 remaining in the first half. Ithaca extended their lead to 20-14 before a pair of buckets from both teams in the final 20 seconds of the half gave the visitors a 22-16 lead at the midway point.
Ithaca out scored the Hornets 24-19 in the second half to earn a hard fought 46-35 victory. Scoring totals were not available at press time. Wauzeka-Steuben dropped to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the Ridge & Valley Conference with the loss while Ithaca moved to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play with the win.
Following this past Monday night’s non-conference home game with Boscobel, the Hornets are back on the court this Thursday night when they host the Kickapoo Panthers at 7:15 pm.
