A 29-8 halftime deficit at Barneveld proved to be too much for coach Veronica Zinkle and her River Ridge girls basketball team to overcome, as they suffered a 53-37 loss to the host Eagles last Thursday night.
Counting towards their conference record, the Timberwolves fell to 2-3 in league play and 7-3 overall with the loss, while Barneveld improved to 4-1, 8-3.
The Timberwolves got off to a slow start offensively, and were held to just eight points in the first half. Senior starter Reghan Zinkle had three points in the half, while sophomore Erin Adrian came off the bench to score the team’s other five.
Things picked up considerably for the River Ridge girls in the second half, where they outscored their opponent 29-24, but couldn’t make up the entire 21-point deficit.
Freshman Ava Nies and senior Lydia Mason led the charge in the second half, Nies scoring a team-high 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Nies also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to go along with two assists and two steals.
Mason chipped in eight points in the second half on two field goals and a 4-for-6 performance from the free throw line. She also had three rebounds and two assists in the loss.
Adrian finished with seven points and five boards, while Zinkle added six points with three in each half.
On the night, River Ridge made 12-of-36 shot attempts, including 4-of-16 from downtown. They were 9-of-20 from the free throw line and came away with seven steals.
This Thursday night the Timberwolves (2-3, 7-3) will travel to Highland (2-3, 5-5).
