The MFL MarMac girls basketball team returned to action Jan. 2, losing 50-36 to Houston, Minn., in a Border Battle game in Decorah.
The Bulldogs got back in the win column the following night, cruising past West Central 52-18 to improve to 6-4 overall and 6-1 in the Upper Iowa Conference.
Both teams got off to a slow start, with MFL MarMac up just 7-5 after the opening period, but the Bulldogs finished the half on a 25-4 run to lead 32-9 heading into the locker room. The defense held the Blue Devils to four points or less in each of the remaining quarters as well.
The Bulldogs shot just 27.5 percent from the field, but got to the free throw line a whopping 40 times, making 22 of those attempts.
Emma Driscoll got to the line 10 times alone and topped the points column with 11. Her stat line also included three rebounds, three steals and an assist. Ava Kishman was three for six from the field, for 10 points, and snagged five of the team’s 13 steals. She was one of a trio of Bulldogs with four rebounds. Cora Keehner netted eight points, three rebounds and two steals, while Emme Wikner added seven points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
This week’s schedule included non-conference opponent Decorah Jan. 6, then Class 1A eighth-ranked Kee on Jan. 7. Along with Turkey Valley, Kee and MFL MarMac both sit with only one loss in the UIC.
The Bulldogs will close out the week Jan. 10, versus North Fayette Valley, the only conference team to beat Kee this season.
