It took a team from Minnesota to hand the MFL MarMac boys basketball team its first loss of the season last week. The Bulldogs fell 60-52 to the Houston Hurricanes in a Border Battle match-up rescheduled from mid-December to Jan. 2.
MFL MarMac held a slight 14-13 edge following the opening period, but Houston mounted a 21-16 run to lead 34-30 by halftime. The Hurricanes pulled ahead further, 48-41, in the third quarter and held off the Bulldogs down the stretch.
Without leading scorer Parker Kuehl, the Bulldogs hit 36.4 percent of shots from the field, below their season average of 43.7, but still had seven three-pointers. They got to the foul line only seven times, making five of those attempts.
Brock Hackett’s 17 points—nine of which came from long range—were tops on the team and he grabbed five rebounds. Carter Lightfoot followed with 16 points, and led MFL MarMac with eight assists, seven steals and six rebounds. Wesley Corlett contributed eight points, three rebounds and three blocks, while Landyn Miene finished with six points, five rebounds, an assist and a block.
It was a different story Jan. 3, as the Bulldogs ran away from one-win West Central 79-26 for their eighth victory of the season. MFL MarMac shot over 50 percent from the field and drained 14 threes, while the defense snagged 18 steals and three blocks, limiting the Blue Devils to nine or fewer points in each quarter.
Lightfoot was responsible for four shots from behind the arc, for 12 of his 16 points, and had four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Kuehl returned to the lineup with 11 points, and added six assists, four rebounds and three steals. Kyler Nuehring chipped in 10 points off the bench and grabbed seven steals and a pair of rebounds. Miene finished with nine points, while Hackett and Eli Hanson had eight apiece.
The Bulldogs will face their toughest test of the season this week, hosting Kee on Jan. 7 and North Fayette Valley Jan. 10—two teams who are vying with them for the top spot in the Upper Iowa Conference. The Hawks are 5-1 in the UIC, their only loss coming to the undefeated TigerHawks.
