Wins over Central and Postville last week kept the MFL MarMac boys basketball team an undefeated 7-0.

Against Central on Dec. 17, the Bulldogs surged ahead 25-13 after the first quarter and built a 45-22 lead by halftime, after limiting the Warriors to just nine second quarter points. They increased the advantage to 30 points in the second half, winning 75-45.

MFL MarMac hit 46.2 percent of shots from the field, including eight three-pointers. The Bulldogs took nearly 20 more shots than Central, aided by 18 steals. The Warriors committed 22 turnovers in total.

Parker Kuehl continued to lead the Bulldogs’ scoring efforts, putting up 20 points along with five rebounds, five steals, four assists and a block. Carter Lightfoot knocked down 16 points—nine of which came from behind the arc—and earned a double-double with 10 assists. He also led MFL MarMac with eight steals.

Landyn Miene contributed 14 points, seven rebounds and two assists, while Wesley Corlett had a 4-5 night off the bench for 10 points. He added five rebounds, a steal and an assist.

The Bulldogs tied a season high for points in an 81-63 win at Postville on Dec. 20. They led just 14-7 after the first period, but were up 40-20 by halftime. A 33-point third quarter gave MFL MarMac a hefty 73-38 advantage heading into the final frame, when Postville regained some ground, ending the game on a 25-8 run to cut the margin to under 20 points.

Buoyed by 11 three-pointers, the Pirates’ 63 points were the most the Bulldog defense had allowed this season, but MFL MarMac players hit 10 long-range shots themselves and made 47.2 percent of shots overall. Similar to the previous game, the Bulldogs also benefitted from 15 steals and blocked two shots.

Kuehl connected on four three-pointers—part of his 26 points—and had four rebounds, three assists and three steals. In the starting lineup for the first time this season, Corlett earned a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, to go with three assists, three steals and a pair of blocks.

Brock Hackett netted 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal, while Lightfoot picked up his second double-double of the week on 11 points and 10 assists. He also led the team with five steals and grabbed six rebounds. Miene was the fifth starter in double-digits, with 11 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Now 5-0 in the Upper Iowa Conference, MFL MarMac is locked atop the standings with North Fayette Valley and Kee. The Bulldogs will see both teams the second week of January. They will begin action in the new year on Jan. 2, in the rescheduled Border Battle versus Houston, Minn., in Decorah. On Jan. 3, the Bulldogs will play at West Central.
