MFL MarMac girls win pair of duals, rack up victories at scramble

The MFL MarMac girls wrestling team won two duals and narrowly lost another in its first dual meet of the season at St. Ansgar on Dec. 17.

 

The Bulldogs downed Janesville 42-28 in the first match-up of the night. Kennedy Bachman and Mackenzie Bachman earned falls in their respective 100- and 125-pound matches, while Ashlyn Blake (105), Veda Torkelson (110), Charlotte Koether (130), Audrey Ruff (170) and Isla Henkes (190) won due to forfeit.

 

Bayleigh Wood lost her 140-pound bout by major decision, and Janesville earned four victories by forfeit. There were double forfeits at 135 and 235.

 

MFL MarMac edged St. Ansgar 34-27 in the second dual, aided by another pin from Kennedy Bachman and a 10-1 major decision win for Wood. Blake, Torkelson, Ruff and Henkes won by forfeit.

 

St. Ansgar scored forfeit victories at four weights and won by 7-2 decision over Bulldog Koether at 130. There were double forfeits at 125, 140 and 235.

 

Postville won the final dual of the night 36-30, winning five matches by forfeit but just one wrestled bout—a fall for Ariana Menne over Ruff at 170 pounds.

 

The Bulldogs had  forfeits at 110 pounds for Torkelson and 190 for Henkes, as well as a trio of pins from Kennedy Bachman, Koether and Wood. Blake and Mackenzie Bachman did not wrestle.

 

The team wrapped up the week Dec. 20, in the second annual MFL MarMac Girls Scramble. The event included nine schools from Iowa and Wisconsin, with each wrestler getting at least two matches.

 

Kennedy Bachman won both her bouts, the first a fall over Prairie du Chien’s Rosalie Kossman, then an 18-0 technical fall against Macy Rose of North Fayette Valley.

 

Blake split her two matches, winning the first by fall over Ali Jelinek of Boscobel Wauzeka-Steuben, but getting pinned by Liliana Cortes from Postville in the second.

 

Torkelson battled for over a minute in her first match against Postville’s Angie Barrutia-Rucal, but was eventually pinned. She also lost by fall to Lancaster’s Lily Vesperman.

 

Mackenzie Bachman cruised through her two bouts, first pinning Brooklyn Hanke of Lancaster in 48 seconds, then taking 1:29 to earn a fall over Claire Koester from NFV.

 

Koether scored falls in her two matches as well, taking down Amelia Johnsen of Lancaster in the first and Mally Linkenmeyer of Riceville in the second.

 

Wood went 1-2 on the night, losing a hard-fought match with Raquelle Venson of Lancaster in the opener. She rebounded to pin Mallory McCullick from Boscobel Wauzeka-Steuben in the second match, then lost by 12-3 major decision to Postville’s Rosmery Sis Pable in the last bout.

 

Ruff started the scramble pinning Riceville’s Kennedy Linkenmeyer, but succumbed to familiar foe Ariana Menne of Postville in match two.

 

Henkes was pinned in both her matches, first by Menne from Postville, then by Linkenmeyer.

 

The Bulldogs will now be off for two weeks for winter break. Their next competition will be Jan. 10, in a tournament at Central.
