The MFL MarMac boys wrestling team closed out the 2024 portion of its schedule last week, winning three more duals and having multiple wrestlers place at a tournament.
The Bulldogs welcomed Bellevue, Maquoketa Valley and Midland for duals on Dec. 17, taking down all three.
The 39-35 win over Bellevue was the closest of the night, as the Bulldogs gave up four forfeits but lost just two wrestled matches. Caleb Zuercher was pinned at 190 pounds and Rylan Schroeder lost by technical fall at 144.
Dracen Howe and Will Howes pinned their respective 215- and 285-pound opponents in less than a minute, then Quinn McGeough won an 11-5 decision at 165 and Austin Schaller secured a fall at 175. Tacoma Thompson (113), Keith Anderson (132) and Gavin Kishman (138) won via forfeit.
MFL MarMac bested Maquoketa Valley 36-24, led by pins from Howes and McGeough. Thompson, Anderson, Kishman and Zuercher picked up wins by forfeit.
Howe was pinned at 215, Schroeder at 144 and Schaller at 175, and the Wildcats earned a forfeit at 157. Neither team fielded wrestlers at 106, 120, 126 and 150.
The dual versus Midland was also full of forfeits. Neither team had wrestlers at 106 and 113, and the Bulldogs earned wins at 165 with McGeough and 215 with Tristan Hoopes. Midland picked up forfeit victories at 126, 150 and 157.
MFL MarMac had an advantage in wrestled matches, with falls by Howes, Thompson, Anderson, Kishman, Schroeder and Schaller propelling them to a 48-24 victory. Zuercher was pinned at 190, in the only match Midland won outside forfeits.
The Bulldogs closed out the week Dec. 21, in the Regal Wrestling Invitational at Regina. They scored 107.5 points, finishing eighth overall, with a pair of tournament champions.
McGeough remained unbeaten this season, winning his 165-pound quarterfinal by fall, then advancing to the first-place match by 7-1 decision. In the title bout, he defeated Cooper Gates of West Branch 7-5.
Heavyweight Howes is also without a loss, after pinning his way to the top of the podium at Regina.
Thompson (113) and Anderson (132) placed third in their respective brackets, and Kishman was fourth at 138. Howe worked his way to seventh at 215. Schroeder (144) and Zuercher (190) did not place.
The Bulldogs will be off the next two weeks for winter break, and will return to action Jan. 9 for the Upper Iowa Conference Dual Tournament at Central.
