The MFL MarMac boys basketball team remains undefeated after a pair of wins last week.

The Bulldogs built a 10-point first quarter lead and increased that advantage to more than 20 points in the second half in a 76-48 rout of visiting Edgewood-Colesburg on Dec. 9. It was another solid shooting night for MFL MarMac, as players combined for 47.7 percent from the field and hit seven three-pointers, including four by senior Parker Kuehl.

MFL MarMac’s defense contributed to the success, blocking 10 Viking shots and grabbing 35 defensive rebounds—more than Ed-Co had on both ends of the floor. The Bulldogs also had 10 steals.

Three players achieved double-doubles, starting with a 20-point, 10-rebound night for Kuehl, who also had four assists and two steals. Landyn Miene’s stat line included 19 points and 10 rebounds as well as eight blocks, while Carter Lightfoot had 14 points and 10 assists to go with six rebounds, three steals and a block. Brock Hackett finished the night with 11 points, three rebounds, two steals and an assist.

The following game was the tightest of the season for the Bulldogs, who needed overtime to defeat Upper Iowa Conference foe South Winneshiek 60-59. The Warriors held a 14-11 edge through the opening period, and were up 23-22 at halftime. The third and fourth quarters ended with the teams knotted 39-39 and 54-54, but MFL MarMac out-scored South Winn 6-5 in the fifth period to claim the victory.

The Bulldogs’ field goal percentage dropped to 32.4 percent, below the 39.7 percent by South Winn. Both teams struggled from behind the arc, with MFL MarMac hitting just two of 19 three-pointers and the Warriors four of 20. MFL MarMac had a slight advantage from the free throw line, going 12 of 17 to South Winn’s nine of 18. Another disparity was the Warriors’ 17 turnovers, while MFL MarMac had just nine.

Kuehl was the team’s top scorer with 20 points, and secured his second double-double of the week with 10 rebounds. He had five steals and one assist as well. With 11 points and 12 rebounds, Miene also earned another double-double, and continued to use his height with three blocks.

Lightfoot netted 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal, while Eli Hanson contributed five points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal.

The wins improved the Bulldogs to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play. MFL MarMac has two UIC match-ups this week—at Central on Dec. 17, then at Postville Dec. 20—before heading to winter break.
