The MFL MarMac girls basketball team is now 2-2, snapping a two-game losing skid at the end of last week with a conference win at Clayton Ridge.
Waukon handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the season, 47-30, on Dec. 2. It was a poor shooting night for MFL MarMac, who connected on just 21.7 percent of shots from the field and landed one of eight three-point attempts and nine of 16 free throws.
Samantha Ruff’s seven points led the effort. She also pitched in three rebounds and two assists. Ava Kishman contributed six points and four rebounds, while Emme Wikner had six points, two assists, a rebound and a steal. Emma Driscoll netted five points and led the Bulldogs with six rebounds.
The MFL MarMac offense continued to struggle the following night in a 45-40 loss against Turkey Valley. The Bulldogs were 26 percent shooting from the field and made only 11 of 20 free throw attempts.
Although missed opportunities helped the Trojans build a second half lead, MFL MarMac fought back and cut the margin to one point with under 40 seconds remaining. Turkey Valley hit a pair of foul shots to make it 43-40, but the Bulldogs turned the ball over on their next possession to stall the comeback momentum.
Wikner put up 15 points and added three assists, two rebounds and a steal to her stat line. Autumn Shaw had eight points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Evelyn Fritz and Kacie Picha each chipped in five points off the bench.
MFL MarMac got back on track Dec. 6, defeating Clayton Ridge 43-32. Wikner again led the Bulldogs with 11 points, followed by Shaw with nine and six apiece from Driscoll and Fritz.
Another three games are on the schedule this week, with the Bulldogs hosting Edgewood-Colesburg on Dec. 9, then heading to South Winneshiek Dec. 10. They will conclude with a Border Battle match-up with Houston, Minn., at Decorah High School, on Dec. 14.
