Five MFL MarMac wrestlers placed at the Central Elkader Girls Tournament on Dec. 3, which included 104 wrestlers from nearly 20 schools.
Kennedy and Mackenzie Bachman won their respective 100- and 125-pound brackets. Kennedy pinned her way to the first-place match, where she earned a fall in under one minute over Jasmin Roman from Postville. Mackenzie also relied on falls to reach the title match, but whereas the previous three needed under 40 seconds, it took two minutes to pin West Delaware’s Lexi Bunting in her final bout of the tournament.
At 170 pounds, Audrey Ruff started the night with an overtime win, then followed with a fall, before getting pinned in the semifinals. Ariana Menne of Postville secured a fall in the third-place match, putting Ruff fourth in the bracket.
After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, Ashlyn Blake lost semifinal and consolation semifinal matches at 105 pounds. She received another bye in the fifth-place match to take that spot on the podium.
In the 190-pound bracket, Isla Henkes placed sixth. The freshman lost her first match by fall, then received a bye out of consolation round one, before getting pinned in the second. Henkes battled Oelwein’s Makenley Raber for nearly three minutes in the fifth-place match, but was eventually pinned.
Charlotte Koether did not place at 130 pounds, but picked up two wins, including an exciting fall over Jayla Patten of Nashua-Plainfield late in the opening match and a pin of Sophia Schuman from Waterloo Columbus in consolation round two.
At 115 pounds, Veda Torkelson went 0-2 and did not place.
As a team, the Bulldogs compiled a score of 78 for eighth place, one point back of North Butler Clarksville. West Delaware won the tournament with a 154.
This week, MFL MarMac heads to a tourney at Waverly-Shell Rock Dec. 10, then to one at Luther College Dec. 13.
