The Seneca Royals girls basketball team opened the 2024–25 season on Tuesday, Nov. 19, under new head coach Jared Payne at Cashton.
The Eagles spoiled the party when they defeated the Royals 67-11. Final stats were not available as of press time.
The Royals returned home two nights later when they welcomed Riverdale to town.
The visiting Chieftains took a 19-17 lead into the locker room at halftime before extending it a bit early in the second half. The Royals never stopped fighting as they managed to take the lead several times in the second half before Riverdale used key free throws down the stretch to pull away for a 49-43 win.
The Royals got a game-high 21 points from senior Maya Buffington (to go along with nine rebounds and five steals), eight points from junior Dhyllan Kemp, six points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals from senior Lydia West, five points from junior Camryn Lenzendof and three points from ninth-grader Grace Varo in her varsity debut. Seneca dropped to 0-2 on the season while Riverdale improved to 2-0.
The Royals are back in action next Monday, Dec. 2, when they travel to Ontario, Wis. to take on another non-conference foe from the Scenic Bluffs Conference in the Brookwood Falcons.
