Behind a balanced scoring attack, the River Ridge girls basketball team began the 2024-25 season with a 38-21 non-conference victory over visiting De Soto last Thursday night.
Returning a wealth of talent that includes five seniors, three of which have been on varsity since their freshman year, coach Veronica Zinkle enters her fifth season as head coach with an abundance of experienced athletes.
Against the Pirates last Thursday night, senior Madi Wehrle and freshman Ava Nies each finished with a team-high 10 points, while senior Melissa Sletten was close behind with eight and fellow senior Braylyn Quick with six.
Nies also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, followed by Wehrle with six and Quick five, while sophomore Mckenzie Taylor dished out a team-high three assists and Sletten came away with a team-high five steals.
The Timberwolves held a halftime lead of 18-10 over their opponent before outscoring them again in the second half, 20-11.
On the night, River Ridge made 14-of-54 (26%) total shot attempts, including 4-of-19 (21%) from 3-point land. They were 6-of-14 (43%) from the free throw line compared to 4-of-9 (44%) for De Soto.
“For the first game of the season, we competed well,” said coach Zinkle. “As a team, we are continuing to learn how to work together with many returning varsity athletes and several athletes taking on a new role within our team.”
“Overall, we had a lot of good looks on the offensive side, and our defense was aggressive,” she added.
This past Monday night the Timberwolves hosted Fennimore in a non-conference contest, and will next host Shullsburg on Tuesday, Dec. 3, to begin play in the Six Rivers West conference.
