The Central cross country team traveled to North Linn on Oct. 24, for the Class 1A state qualifying meet, as runners raced for a spot in the state meet at Fort Dodge on Saturday, Nov. 2.
The boys team finished fourth with a score of 122, well behind meet winners Springville who scored 73, but Gavin Holst battled throughout the race to remain in the top 10 individually. He secured a ninth place finish by three seconds in a course best time of 17:47.1, punching his ticket to state for the first time in his four-year varsity career.
Coach Mark Bauder said the finish “is especially satisfying because Gavin is a senior and was in the top 20 both his freshman and sophomore years and was in the hunt all season last year until he got ill just days before this meet last year.”
Holst is the 18th boys runner to represent Central in the state meet and the first since 2015.
Following Holst was Carson Ruegnitz, who finished 20th in a course best time of 18:26.3, and Jesse Polkinghorn was 25th in 18:47.7. Declan Finley was 43rd, Henry Reimer 44th, Tyce Zittergruen 47th and Vaughn Zittergruen 67th.
The girls varsity team finished its season sixth out of the 20 teams assigned to the North Linn meet. Blair Scherf had a team high finish in 34th place. Coral Rork was 44th, followed by Alexis Thiese in 50th, Hannah Friedlein in 52nd and Layla Embretson in 57th. Aspen Rork placed 64th and Lily Becwar finished 69th.
The Warriors will cheer on Holst at the state meet scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge. Race time is 11:15 a.m.
