The Seneca-Wauzeka-Steuben Bluegolds used a dominating rushing attack Friday night to defeat the Boscobel Bulldogs 36-7 and earn a spot in the WIAA playoffs for the eighth time as a co-op.
S-W-S got on the scoreboard first thanks to a one-yard touchdown run by Cooper Lomas with just 18 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Lomas added the first of his three successful PAT kicks on the night to make the score 7-0.
Boscobel quickly responded as the Bulldogs got a 43-yard touchdown pass with 10:59 remaining in the first half to tie the game at 7-7. The visiting Bluegolds changed the course of the game with two touchdowns in the final two minutes of the first half. Lomas added another one-yard touchdown run with 1:49 left in the first half before rushing in from two-yards out with 10 seconds left in the first half to make the score 21-7 in favor of Seneca-Wauzeka-Steuben.
Lomas used his arm and leg in the third quarter to extend the Bluegolds lead. He connected with receiver Tucker DuCharme on a eight-yard touchdown pass with 6:48 remaining in the quarter before adding a 27-yard field goal with 2:55 left in the quarter as the Bluegolds extended their lead to 30-7.
Owen Oppriecht added a one-yard touchdown run with 5:01 remaining in the game for the final score of 36-7 as Seneca-Wauzeka-Steuben finished the regular season with a 4-5 overall record and 3-4 in the Six Rivers Conference.
The win put the Bluegolds on the playoff bubble and thanks to an early non-conference win over eventual playoff team Cashton and a strong conference schedule that included three top-10 ranked teams in D7, the Bluegolds had good enough tie-breaking numbers to qualify for the playoffs with a sub .500 conference record.
The Bluegolds earned a seven seed in their D7 grouping and will travel to second seeded Cochrane-Fountain City this Friday night. The Pirates finished 8-1 overall and shared the Dairyland Conference Championship with Blair-Taylor and Pepin/Alma with a 6-1 conference record. They will host the Bluegolds in Fountain City this Friday night at 7 p.m.
