Central boys win UIC cross country title

Central’s varsity boys cross country team placed five runners in the top 15 and won the team title at the Oct. 17 Upper Iowa Conference meet.
Running on the home course at the Elkader Golf and Country Club, the Warriors put together a “fantastic day,” in the words of coach Mark Bauder.
Central finished with a score of 38, besting South Winneshiek’s 52 to win the first boys team title since 2014.
Varsity medalists included Gavin Holst, who finished second individually with a time of 17:34.5, and Carson Ruegnitz, who placed fifth in 18:03.2. Also receiving medals were Jesse Polkinghorn in eighth place, Tyce Zittergruen in 13th and Henry Reimer in 15th. Polkinghorn, Zittergruen and Reimer also ran career best times.
The Central girls put together a fifth place finish. Coral Rork led the way in 21st place, with a career best time of 23:30.5, followed by Blair Scherf in 23rd with a course best 23:46.6. Next was Hannah Friedlein in 35th, Alexis Thiese in 36th, Layla Embretson 38th, Aspen Rork 42nd and Lily Becwar 44th.
The Warriors will run at North Linn on Thursday, Oct. 24, in a Class 1A state qualifying meet. The girls will start at 4 p.m., followed by the boys race at 4:30 p.m.
