The Seneca-Wauzeka-Steuben Bluegolds football team welcomed the River Ridge Timberwolves to Seneca last Friday night, looking to get on the playoff bubble with a victory.
The Timberwolves got on the scoreboard with a 4-yard touchdown run by Brandon Davis in the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead on the hosts.
The Bluegolds would answer 51 seconds into the second quarter, when quarterback Cooper Lomas connected with wide receiver Hunter Hagensick on a 32-yard touchdown pass. Lomas’ point-after-touchdown kick was good and the Bluegolds led the Timberwolves 7-6.
River Ridge answered with five seconds remaining in the first half with an interception by Ty Adrian that was returned 50 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. The two-point conversion pass from Reese Drew to Davis was good and the Timberwolves entered halftime with a stunning 14-7 lead.
The second half saw only a pair of touchdowns scored but unfortunately for Seneca-Wauzeka-Steuben, they were both by River Ridge. Davis added a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter before Andrew Neis scored on a 34-yard run in the fourth quarter as the Timberwolves pulled away for a 27-7 victory.
The Bluegolds defense stopped Davis through the air as he was only 2-of-6 for 10 yards passing in the game. Carter Copsey (1 reception for 8 yards) and Drake Barrineau (1 reception for 2 yards) had the two receptions for the Timberwolves.
Nies (20 attempts for 115 yards and 1 touchdown) and Davis (12 attempts for 38 yards and two touchdowns) paced the River Ridge rushing attack with Drew (2 attempts for -7 yards), Adrian (1 attempt for -7 yards) and Brock Bunge (4 attempts for 2 yards) rounding out the Timberwolves ground game.
Lomas was 4-of-9 for 54 yards and 1 touchdown and 1 interception through the air for the Bluegolds. Hagensick caught three of those completions for 50 yards and one touchdown, while Tucker DuCharme had the other catch for 4 yards.
Carson Sime led Seneca-Wauzeka-Steuben on the ground with 22 attempts for 68 yards with Owen Oppriecht (6 attempts for 11 yards), Lomas (4 attempts for 4 yards) and DuCharme (1 attempt for -2 yards) rounding out the Bluegolds offense.
River Ridge improved to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the Six Rivers Conference with the win, while Seneca-Wauzeka-Steuben dropped to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the Six Rivers Conference with the loss.
The Timberwolves clinched their spot in the playoffs with the win, while the Bluegolds will need to defeat Boscobel in this week’s regular season finale to get on the playoff bubble at 3-4 in conference play. Playoff projections so far have the Bluegolds making the playoff field as one of a handful teams to make the playoffs with a 3-4 conference record.
