Repairs, fundraising for Monona Scout House will move forward

At its Oct. 7 regular meeting, the Monona City Council approved moving ahead with repairs to the Scout House on Iowa Street.
Once a schoolhouse that was moved from B45 into town, the building has long been the home of the city’s Boy Scouts, but needs improvements for safety and to prevent further deterioration.
Jim Langhus, former scoutmaster of boys Troop 38 who’s remained involved with the program, estimated under $12,000 would be needed for projects pinpointed on a recent inspection report.
Work will include tiling around the outside of the building and hooking drain spouts up to the tile, as well as upgraded electrical, a new bathroom and furnace, roof improvements, a front door and hand railing.
“There are some things that are not going to be fixed by this. One is replacing the windows and renewing the siding. We’ll keep the siding we have. We have some extra panels in the basement and we’ll caulk where we need to so the outside has some integrity,” Langhus told the council.
Langhus said donations have already been offered for some labor and cost of materials. Fundraising is also planned.
“We have $2,000 in the budget to start with, then we will try to fundraise another $10,000,” he said.
Dog park gets funding
The city announced it has received a $25,000 Upper Mississippi Gaming Corporation grant for the dog park. More discussion on the project is planned for an upcoming meeting.
New fire chief sworn in
Mayor Grant Langhus administered the oath of office to new Monona Fire Chief Garett Palas. Palas takes over for Dave Smith, who served in the position for 12 years.
