Bonnie Basemann is back at the city of Marquette. The council, at its Oct. 8 regular meeting, approved her hiring as city manager/city clerk, retroactive to Sept. 30.

Basemann previously served as city clerk, before resigning in May. She now fills the role held the past year by Mildred Stewart, who was terminated last month.

The council terminated Stewart due to what mayor Brittany Hemmer described as “dissatisfaction with her ability to complete work.”

In minutes from a Sept. 24 special meeting, council member Tracy Melver suggested termination for Stewart’s failure to provide accurate police commission reports for at least two months and attempting to hire someone, without approval, to complete the reports. Melver also noted Stewart was not responding to citizen requests by email in a timely manner and was being rude to citizens who stopped in city hall. According to Melver, Stewart made inappropriate statements regarding other employees in a public meeting and failed to maintain the city website.

New council member appointed

At its Oct. 8 meeting, the council appointed Jeff Hendrickson to a council seat vacated by Hemmer when she transitioned to mayor. Hendrickson will fill the remainder of Hemmer’s term, until the end of 2025.

Projects moving forward

The council approved hiring Backyard Trails LLC, at an amount not to exceed the budgeted $10,000, to complete a design for the recreational trail currently in the works on the city’s Ohmer property.

Additionally, the council approved the final plans, specifications and estimates for the new Twin Bluffs Subdivision. An advertisement for bids to complete infrastructure for the subdivision is posted in this week’s Times-Register.

The project consists of the development of a new residential subdivision that will be constructed between the city shop/police station and Gencor. The proposed improvements will include site excavation/grading and construction/installation of streets, sanitary sewer, water main, storm sewer and stormwater management.
