Joan Marie Atkinson
July 21, 1952–August 20, 2024
Joan Marie Atkinson, age 72, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024, at her residence with her family by her side. She was born on July 21, 1952; the daughter of Harold and Sophia (Burgus) Lewis.
Joan graduated from Boscobel High School in 1971 and married the love of her life Donald Atkinson on Feb. 16, 1973. Together they built a life of working hard and raising their children. The whole family-built D.A. Diggers Trucking and Excavating together. Joan dedicated nearly 40 years of her life to Rayovac.
Outside of work, Joan and Don shared a passion for classic cars and motorcycles. She spent many hours going to her children’s and grandchildren’s high school games, sewing, embordering, and painting her statues. Joan enjoyed collecting and filling her home with the may different knick-knacks that she found over the years.
Above all, Joan’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, and friend that would do anything at any time for anyone. This included many trips to the zoo, the beach, plant picnics, family get-togethers, and parades. Her warm smile, unwavering love, and hard-working ethic will be deeply missed.
Joan is survived by her husband of 51 years, Don; three children: Don (Audra) Atkinson, Tonia (Heath Hubanks) Vial, and LaVern (Sara) Atkinson III; six grandchildren: Tyler (Shawna) Atkinson, Haley Atkinson, LaVern Atkinson, Jacob Atkinson, Jory Vial, and Ryan Vial; one great grandchild, Grayson Atkinson, and one on the way; siblings, Twin sister Jean (Charles) Roghers and Charles (Carmen) Lewis; sister in law, Sharon Lewis; brother in law, Francis Fuerstenberg; close friend, Merry Cooley, special niece, Darcie Cisneros; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Christopher Atkinson; brothers William (Diane) Lewis, Richard Lewis, and Randy Lewis; sisters Maxine Fuerstenberg and Diane K. Lewis; two infant sisters Florence and Patricia; and close friends Roger Cooley and Rose Stivarius.
A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2024, at the Century Hall in Wauzeka with a burial taking place in Wauzeka Cemetery.
